Rescuing The Heritage
In addition to the 190 killed and thousands injured, the Beirut explosion ravaged homes, closed businesses and destroyed vital infrastructure. Alas, it has also damaged irreplaceable and historical works of art.
Gaby Maamary, a university teacher and artist himself, is leading an initiative to save and restore Beirut’s works of art, free of charge. Under the guidance of Art Nub Beirut, an art school he founded with his partner Nayla Yared, the "Beirut Fine Art Heritage Rescue" offers free damage assessment, consultancy and restoration services. Assembling a team of professional volunteers from different backgrounds, the works of art will be restored regardless of the artist who created it or its value.
By bringing the artworks back to life, Gaby and Nayla wish to raise awareness of their national heritage amongst Lebanese.
